What's a Yorkshire Terrier actually like?

The Yorkshire Terrier was originally bred in the mills and mines of 19th-century Yorkshire, England, to hunt rats. Despite the silky coat and tiny size, that working terrier brain is still very much present — bold, busy, vocal, and absolutely convinced they can take on a Doberman if needed. Don't let the bow in the topknot fool you.

Adult size: 18–23 cm tall, 2–3.5 kg. Lifespan: 13–16 years (one of the longest-lived breeds). Coat: long silky single-layer coat — needs daily brushing if kept long, or a 'puppy cut' every 6–8 weeks if kept short. Sheds very little (a great choice for mild allergy households). Energy: medium — short walks plus indoor play is plenty. Trainability: smart but stubborn — early consistent training is essential, especially for housetraining. Watch out for: tracheal collapse (use a harness, never a collar), dental issues, and barking at everything that moves.
