What's a Saint Bernard actually like?

The Saint Bernard is the gentle giant of the dog world — bred in the Swiss Alps to find lost travellers, today they're one of the calmest, most patient family dogs you'll ever meet. They're also enormous, drooly and not built for hot weather. Get the setup right and they'll repay you with the kind of devotion only a giant breed can give.

Adult size: 70–90 cm tall, 60–90 kg. Lifespan: 8–10 years (giant breeds are sadly short-lived). Coat: long or smooth, sheds heavily twice a year. Energy: surprisingly low — a long walk plus a play session is plenty. Climate: needs AC or a cool tiled floor in Indian summers. Drool: yes. A lot. Keep towels handy.
